What it is

The non-lucrative residence visa is for non-EU nationals who can support themselves, and any family members, without working in Spain. You apply at the Spanish consulate for your place of residence, before you move.

You need to show financial means above the legal threshold, linked to the IPREM indicator, private health insurance with full cover in Spain, a clean criminal record and a medical certificate. Once in Valencia, you apply for your TIE and register on the padrón, and later renew from here.

Who it is for

  • Retirees with a pension who want to live in Valencia.
  • People with savings, rental income or investments.
  • Couples and families moving together.
  • Anyone who does not plan to work in Spain at first.

Documents usually needed

  • Passport valid for the whole period.
  • National visa application form.
  • Proof of financial means (bank statements, pension, rental income).
  • Private health insurance with no co-payments, valid in Spain.
  • Criminal record certificate, legalised or apostilled and translated.
  • Medical certificate.
  • Fee payment as required by the consulate.

Each consulate has its own checklist and appointment system. We adapt the file to the consulate you will apply at.

How we handle it

  1. Means test. We check your funds and income against the current threshold for you and your family.
  2. Consulate. We review your consulate's requirements and appointment process.
  3. File. We prepare the forms and tell you exactly what to legalise and translate.
  4. Application. You attend the consulate with a complete, organised file.
  5. Arrival in Valencia. We can arrange your padrón and TIE once you arrive.

Timeframes

Consulates generally decide within one to three months of a complete application. Collecting apostilles and translations can add a few weeks beforehand.

Price

From 300 € + VAT per main applicant. Each additional family member: 100 € + VAT. Consulate fees, translations and legalisations are separate. Padrón and TIE in Valencia are quoted apart.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work remotely on a non-lucrative visa?

No. This visa does not allow work in Spain. If you work remotely, look at the digital nomad route instead.

Do I have to live in Valencia city?

No. You can settle anywhere in the province, from the city to the coast or inland villages. You register on the padrón where you live.

Can I use Spanish public healthcare?

Initially you need private insurance. Your situation can change later depending on your status.
