What it is

The Número de Identidad de Extranjero is the reference the Spanish administration gives every foreigner with financial, professional or social dealings in the country. It never changes: if you leave Valencia and return a decade later, it is the same number, and it will be printed on any residence document you obtain afterwards.

On its own, the NIE is a paper certificate, not a card. Two common situations need a different procedure: if you already hold a visa or residence authorisation, what you need is the TIE card; if you have an EU, EEA or Swiss passport and are moving to Valencia for more than three months, the EU registration certificate gives you the number as part of your registration.

In Valencia province, NIE applications are presented in person at the National Police offices that handle foreigners’ documentation, in Valencia city and in towns such as Alzira, Gandia, Ontinyent and Sagunto. We tell you which one applies to your address.

Who it is for

  • Buyers of a home or holiday flat in Valencia, including people who will not live here.
  • People who have been offered a job in Valencia and need a number before the contract.
  • Heirs, investors and company directors with assets or business in the province.
  • Anyone opening a bank account, buying a car or dealing with the Tax Agency.
  • People unsure whether their case calls for a NIE, a TIE or an EU certificate.

Documents usually needed

  • Passport (or EU national ID card) with a photocopy.
  • Form EX-15, filled in and signed.
  • Receipt for the official fee, paid with modelo 790 code 012.
  • Evidence of the reason, for example a reservation contract for a property, a job offer, a notary's letter or inheritance papers.
  • Your appointment confirmation.

The police can ask for extra evidence depending on the reason you give. Before booking, we check that your supporting document clearly explains why you need the number.

How we handle it

  1. Quick assessment. We confirm that a NIE is really what you need, and whether it is better done in Valencia or at a Spanish consulate abroad.
  2. Paperwork. We fill in the EX-15 and the 790 fee form and review your justification.
  3. Booking. We search the official appointment system for the right police office in Valencia province and secure a slot for you.
  4. Briefing. You receive a checklist of what to bring and how the visit works. The appointment is personal, so you attend on your own.
  5. After the visit. We review the certificate and explain where to use it next: bank, notary, employer or Hacienda.

Timeframes

Appointment availability is the variable that matters. In Valencia city slots open and close quickly, so some weeks there are none and then several at once; offices in smaller towns of the province can be easier. Once you attend, the certificate is often handed over the same day or soon after. We give you a realistic estimate before you commit.

Price

From 90 € + VAT for our NIE service. The government fee is separate and you pay it directly. If you also need the padrón or a Social Security number in Valencia, ask for a combined price.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my NIE in Valencia if I am only here on holiday?

Yes, many non-residents do, typically when buying property. You need a clear economic or professional reason and an appointment at a police office in the province.

Is it quicker to apply from my home country?

Sometimes. Spanish consulates also process NIE applications, and for some people that is faster than waiting for a slot in Valencia. We compare both options for you.

Will my NIE let me live in Valencia?

No. It identifies you, nothing more. Your right to live or work here depends on your nationality and, if you are not an EU citizen, on having a visa or authorisation.

My notary needs a NIE next month. Is that realistic?

It can be, but it depends on appointments. Tell us your completion date as soon as possible and we will plan the timing, including the consulate route if that helps.
