Padrón certificate in València: how to get it online or in person

A padrón certificate (certificado de empadronamiento) is the paper that proves you are registered as living at an address in València. If you are already on the city’s padrón and you are an adult, you can order it free of charge through a form on valencia.es and receive it by email or by post, or download it straight away from the council’s sede electrónica if you sign in with a digital certificate or an electronic DNI. This page covers only that step: which of the four certificates to choose, how each route works, and what to check before you hand the paper to another office. Registering for the first time is a different procedure, explained in our empadronamiento guide.
- The Ajuntament de València issues four kinds of padrón certificate: individual, individual histórico, familiar and vivienda.
- Requests through the web form are checked by the council before anything is sent, so the document does not arrive on the spot.
- Procedure PA.CE.10 on sede.valencia.es gives an instant certificate to anyone who signs in electronically.
- People no longer registered, or applying for a deceased relative, use a separate procedure, PA.CE.15.
- If you live in Paterna, Torrent, Mislata or any other town of the province, your own town hall issues the certificate, not València.
The four certificates and when each one is asked for
The council’s page for this procedure lists the options in a drop-down menu. Picking the wrong one is the most frequent reason a certificate gets rejected by the office that requested it, so read the request letter or checklist first.
- Individual. Confirms that you are currently registered and at which address. For most everyday uses, such as showing a bank, a utility or a regional office where you live, this is the one.
- Individual histórico. Shows the date you were first registered and every change since then. Choose it whenever the procedure is about how long you have lived in the city, not just where you live today.
- Familiar. Lists everyone registered with you in the same household, including children, with their details. Schools and some family-related procedures ask for it. On the online form you add each person with the «+» button.
- Vivienda. Records your own registration together with the total number of people registered in the home. The council names two uses for it: family reunification (reagrupación familiar) and invitation letters (carta de invitación).
When a document list just says «certificado de empadronamiento» with no type, the individual version is normally what is meant. If it mentions dates, length of stay or the first day of registration, go for the histórico.
Route 1: the web form, delivered by email or post
This route needs no electronic signature, which makes it the practical choice for most newcomers who have only a passport or a TIE. On the trámites section of valencia.es («certificado de padrón») you fill in:
- surname or surnames, first name and date of birth;
- your NIF, NIE or passport number, exactly as it appears on your padrón record;
- the address where you are registered, with postal code, town and province;
- a contact phone number (the council prefers a mobile, so its staff can call you if something does not match);
- the type of certificate;
- how you want it sent: «correo ordinario» to your registered address, or «eMail», in which case you type the email address twice.
The page states that the certificate is not issued immediately: staff check the request before sending it. That is the trade-off for not needing a digital identity. If you have an appointment coming up, allow time for the check, and for postal delivery if you choose it. The council does not publish a fixed turnaround for this route, so we do not give one here.
A tip from the field: the identity number you type has to match the one on your registration. People who registered with a passport and later received a TIE with an NIE sometimes find the form does not recognise them. If that happens, ask the council to update your padrón data first.
Route 2: the sede electrónica, instant download
For a certificate in your hands within minutes, use procedure PA.CE.10 on sede.valencia.es. The council’s own instruction is clear: an immediate certificate is only available through the sede, with a digital certificate or an electronic DNI. The sede’s page on identification systems also lists the Cl@ve options of the Spanish government. Once you are signed in, the system reads your identity from that credential, which is why no human check is needed.
Most foreign residents can get a software digital certificate from the FNMT using their NIE, and later register on Cl@ve. That takes a little time the first time round, but after that every padrón certificate, and many other Spanish procedures, are a few clicks away.
Route 3: in person
The official page for OAC Tabacalera (Carrer d’Amadeo de Saboya 11) includes registration certificates among its padrón services, and the padrón office in the city hall building on Plaça de l’Ajuntament handles padrón matters as well. An appointment through the cita previa system on valencia.es, or through the 010 line, lets you pick a slot. Take your identity document. This is a good option when your data needs correcting at the same time.
Not registered any more, or asking for someone else
The web form above is only for adults who are currently on València’s padrón. If you have been removed from the register (for example after moving away, or because a non-EU registration was not renewed in time), or you need a certificate about a person who has died, the council sends you to a different sede procedure, PA.CE.15. Read its requirements on sede.valencia.es before applying, as they depend on the case.
Before you hand it over
- Freshness. The certificate shows its date of issue. Many offices only accept a recent one, and each sets its own limit, so check the requirement of the procedure you are applying for and order the certificate close to the date.
- Everyone listed. For a familiar certificate, make sure every member of the household appears. If a child is missing, the child has not been registered yet.
- Your registration is still alive. Non-EU residents without long-term residence must renew their padrón entry every two years (article 16.1 of Ley 7/1985). If it lapsed, no certificate will be issued at that address until you register again.
- The right council. València city and the towns around it keep separate registers. A València certificate says nothing about a home in Burjassot, and the reverse is also true.
Frequently asked questions
Is the padrón certificate free in València?
Yes. The Ajuntament de València’s office pages say its padrón procedures are free of charge, and the certificate is one of them.
Can I get a padrón certificate online without a digital certificate?
Yes. Use the form on valencia.es and choose delivery by email or by post. Staff check the request first, so it is not instant. Only the sede electrónica (PA.CE.10) gives an immediate download, and it needs a digital certificate, an electronic DNI or Cl@ve.
What is the difference between the individual and the histórico certificate?
The individual one confirms your current address. The histórico shows when you first registered and every change since, so it is the one to choose when a procedure asks how long you have lived in the city.
Which certificate do I need for family reunification or an invitation letter?
The council names the vivienda certificate for both uses. It shows your registration and how many people are registered in the home.
